I recently wrote an article about the difficult process I endured to get Testosterone replacement therapy. I would’ve done things completely different had I known then, what I know now. By following the exact process and I’m about to outline for you guys, you will save a shitload of time, money, and headaches.
Low testosterone has become a widespread epidemic with younger guys. Its very frustrating how difficult it can be to get prescribed a critical and basic hormone. It is especially cumbersome in certain parts of the country like the mid-west where this is not yet commonly practiced.
The first thing you want to do is review the symptoms of low test and determine how many apply to your situation.
The next thing most of you will want to do is schedule an appointment with your doctor. Refrain from doing this because it could be a critical mistake in getting adequate treatment!
Depending on your doctor and their willingness to treat for hormone deficiencies, you might not get anything out of them. Which is what happened to me. Your doctor will hear your complaints. If he takes your concern serious he will then schedule you I have an appointment to get blood work. This can be a huge expense even with insurance. The doctor will then make HIS call whether you are a candidate for TRT. (Most doctors are very conservative on this and would rather give you a script for endless amounts of opiods that some testosterone.)
He will then likely schedule you for a follow-up blood test to make sure that the numbers were accurate.
There is a chance that he will still refuse to give you on my replacement therapy. There are a lot of doctors that actually require you to have almost no production whatsoever before they will even consider giving you a prescription. I know this sounds crazy but it is more common than you would believe.
If you seek a second opinion, that doctor may send you through the same process again. So you could find yourself repeating the same cycle over and over. And being out hundreds of dollars because getting blood-work through your doctor is not cheap.
Here is exactly what I would do to get a prescription for testosterone.
Save yourself the bullshit of being sent to every lab in town. Instead, go to discountedlabs.com and order a online test that is a fraction of the cost of being sent to a lab by your doctor. HERE is the exact test and I would get. It will measure your free and total testosterone and is the most cost effective option.
Once you receive the test either in the mail or email you’ll take it to any qualifying lab to have your blood work drawn. A few weeks later you will receive your results from the lab in the mail.
It is at this point where you will be able to read the blood-work and determine what your testosterone levels are. HERE is a chart that has the average ideal testosterone levels by age.
If you are a lot lower than what your testosterone level should be for your age, then you know you have a problem.
Lets assume you discovered that you have low testosterone. This is the point where you will want to schedule an appointment with your general practitioner to try and get on TRT.
You already got your results from discountedlabs.com. So there’s no need for your doctor to require another test. When you tell your doctor about your problems, you need to be really sincere or they wont take you serious at all.
I had to lay it on pretty thick before they would listen.
I basically had to tell my doctor that my hormonal imbalances were affecting my career and my marriage was on the rocks. My low sex drive sex drive was causing problems in the bedroom and I couldn’t concentrate at work. I also told my doctor that I constantly felt like shit all the time and my life was falling apart. Not completely false but certainly exaggerated.
Now if your doctor isn’t sympathetic, you may have to take that blood-work to another doctor. The best thing to do would be fine a endocrinologist that is actually an expert in the human hormone system. But they rarely have openings because they are in such high demand. I eventually found success by going to a urologist who was sympathetic enough to write me a script for TRT.
I’m going to give you guys a forewarning. Some doctors beat around the bush and use other means of getting your testosterone levels up. Tits become fairly common for them to subscribe a bunch of shit like HCG to tell your nuts to start kicking again. Sometimes this works but most often its just a temporary band-aid over a much bigger problem. Therefore it becomes a frustrating and expensive way to just delay the Inevitable.
In the end, most guys end up going one of three routes.
- They stick through it and eventually get a prescription for test
- They go on ‘self-induced’ TRT and buy steroids without a prescription
- Give up and feel like shit rest of their lives.
If you stumbled upon this article, you decided to take your health in your own hands. Therefor, option #3 is out of the question. So lets keep going..
Another thing that you might have trouble with our these doctors who want to only prescribe a small amount with injections occurring once every couple of weeks. They might even try and push something like testosterone decoanate as your prescription. This it a long acting ester that is attached to the hormone and prolongs the release of the drug. This is not something that I would suggest that you be OK with. Sure every other week injections sounds more convenient, but it will ultimately result in unstable hormone levels within the blood.
One of my best friends, who was in the military, was stationed in the middle-east for several years. And when he came back from overseas, his testosterone levels were completely shot.
He found a doctor who prescribed him 100 mg of testosterone once every two weeks. He would feel pretty good the first week, but by the beginning of the second week he felt like complete shit again. This is because 100 mg really isn’t that much Testosterone to begin with. Second, the half life is how long it takes for it to completely clear out of your system. Testosterone Enanthate has a half life of roughly 10 days but it usually starts to degrade at around 5 days. Thats why weekly injections are ideal here for hormonal stability.
The testosterone began to decline just halfway through his injection schedule. His body basically didn’t have any testosterone at all his next injection.
Get a medial ester such as testosterone cypionate or enanthate. Find a doctor willing to prescribe a weekly injection supply. I would also suggest you advocate for somewhere around 250mg per week.
If you need more information on using testosterone and TRT, then read THIS article.
This goes over everything thing you need to know on how to use testosterone safely. It covers, the supplies you need, dosing protocols, how to mitigate side effects, and everything else.
You wouldn’t think it to be this cumbersome to get a prescription for a basic hormone. But the hard truth is that it can often be quite difficult. Hopefully, this article has brought to light some of the things you can do to make this process a lot easier. And hopefully save you time, headaches, and money.
